file: aeolianskinner.stjohn-episc.auburn.ny.us.1948 Date: Sat, 17 Dec 1994 20:55:33 -0500 From: CullieM@AOL.COM Subject: AE-S #1142, Auburn, NY This posting continues the "unusual/unknown" EMS/AE-S feature I started a while ago. I've revised the subject so index readers will know what the postings are from this point on. Opus #1142 was built for St. John's Episcopal, Auburn, NY, in 1948. In 1988, after St. John's had merged with another parish and the building was being sold to an evangelical congregation, the organ was very nearly sold to St. Paul's Episcopal, Malden, MA, where it would have replaced Kimball #6943, a 3m of 1929 which was built for the Circle Theatre, Philadelphia, PA. However, at the last minute, an Auburn Roman Catholic parish (Holy Family, I believe) came up with more money and bought the organ; it is now installed in their church. I have no information about what happened in Malden; that Kimball had some LOVELY pipework. #1142 was completely original (barring one added coupler) as of its relocation, showed very high-quality materials and workmanship, and sounded absolutely marvellous. It was in a chamber in the chancel, with no facade or exposed pipework . The electro-pneumatic console was across from the chamber. The two manual divisions are separately enclosed. This is the sort of instrument which would be ideal for a great many parishes today; despite its small size, it is amazingly versatile, and every stop simply sounds good; would that we had more of its kind.
